Half Day Manila Sightseeing
Begin your tour with a hotel pick-up before embarking on the Manila City Tour. Your first stop is Rizal Park, a location steeped in historical significance where numerous national and international events have taken place. It was at this very site that our National hero, Rizal, was executed in his courageous battle against colonialism. Take a brief pause at Rizal's monument to pay your respects.
Next, venture into Intramuros, the ancient walled city constructed by the Spanish in the early 16th century. Over the course of 400 years, Intramuros has borne witness to a multitude of events in Philippine history, enduring both human-made destruction and the forces of nature. Today, it stands as a testament to its storied past, a living memory enriched by European influence.
Within Intramuros, your visit will encompass several notable attractions, including Fort Santiago, the former Spanish military headquarters, Casa Manila, an exemplary colonial house, and the San Agustin Church and its accompanying museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site founded in 1586.
Immerse yourself in Manila’s past and present as you travel by comfortable air-conditioned vehicle through the Old Manila. Step back in time as you stroll through ancient ruins in historic Intramuros, where you’ll visit UNESCO World Heritage-listed San Agustin Church and Fort Santiago. From your expert and friendly local guide, hear about the Philippines’ interesting Spanish colonial period, as well as its modern-day culture.
ITINERARY
Rizal Park
Rizal Park (Filipino Liwasang Rizal), also known as Luneta Park or simply Luneta, is a historic urban park located in Ermita, Manila. It is considered one of the largest urban parks in the Philippines, covering an area of 58 hectares(140 acres). The site on where the park is situated was originally known as Bagumbayan during the Spanish colonial period. It is adjacent to the historic Walled City of Intramuros. Situated on the eastern shore of Manila Bay, the park plays a significant role in shaping the history of the Philippines. The execution of Filipino patriot José Rizal on December 30, 1896 in the same area fanned the flames of the 1896 Philippine Revolution against the Kingdom of Spain. The park was officially named in his honor, and the monument enshrining his remains serves as the park's symbolic focal point. The declaration of Philippine independence from the United States was held here on July 4, 1946, as well as later political rallies, including those of Ferdinand Marcos and Corazon Aquino, the latter having culminated in the People Power Revolution of 1986.
Intramuros
Located south of the Pasig River and east of Manila Bay, the Walled City of Intramuros in Manila was built by the Spaniards about 400 years ago as their political and military base in Asia. It is one of the top tourist spots in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Apart from the 4.5-km wall, from which the name is derived ("within the walls"), other defensive structures used to surround the city, such as moats, cannons, bulwarks, and javelins. These fortifications not only protected Intramuros from man-made disasters but also fended off threats from Chinese pirates, Dutch forces, and other invaders. Despite being heavily influenced by Spanish architecture, with grandiose baroque church designs, renovations have also revealed Chinese influences. However, some structures were not restored after the destruction of multiple wars and remain as ruins today.
Fort Santiago
Fort Santiago is one of the oldest fortifications in Manila, built by the Spaniards in 1571 on the site of a palisaded structure of logs and earth constructed by Rajah Soliman in the native settlement called Maynila. Recognizing the strategic location where the Pasig River flows into Manila Bay, the colonizers built the fort. It was destroyed in 1574 during a Chinese attack led by Limahong, but a stone fort was constructed between 1589 and 1592 and was later repaired and extended after being damaged by the 1645 earthquake. Spanish, British, American, and Japanese occupation forces used the fort as their headquarters and a prison for men, women, children, and soldiers. After its destruction during the Battle of Manila in 1945, the fort was used by the U.S. Transportation Corps as a depot until it was turned over to the Philippine government in 1946. In 1950, Fort Santiago was declared a Shrine of Freedom, and restoration began the following year. Today, it stands as a memorial to the victims of World War II and the sacrifices of the Filipino people in pursuit of freedom.
Casa Manila
The Casa Manila, or “Manila House,” is a living museum showcasing the lifestyle of an affluent Filipino family during the late Spanish colonial period. The façade of Casa Manila was patterned after a house that once stood on Jaboneros Street in the Chinese district of Binondo in the 1850s. The interior decor follows the tastes of the late 19th century, with furniture and furnishings sourced from Europe and China. Painted walls, crystal chandeliers, carved traceries, Chinese ceramics, and gilded furniture reflect the elegance and luxury of a 19th-century Manila house. The house is accessed through the zaguan, a wide stone-paved passageway under the house that leads to the patio. Both the zaguan and patio are paved with Piedra China or Chinese granite, which was once used as ballast in Chinese trading junks. The enclosed courtyard, or patio, is a common feature of Spanish colonial houses in Intramuros. The patio helps cool the rooms of the house facing it. At the far end is the caballeriza or stables, where horses and carriages are kept.
San Agustin Church
San Agustin Church, situated within the walls of Intramuros, is the oldest church in the Philippines. The church, along with the nearby monastery, was the only structure left standing after World War II. The current structure is the third iteration of the church, having survived several natural disasters over time.
In 1574, the Chinese pirate Limahong attacked Manila, resulting in the burning of houses and the San Agustin Church. The church was reconstructed in 1575 using wood, but this version was also burnt down in 1583.
To prevent further disasters, the Augustinian friars decided to use adobe stones for the construction of the third church. In 1586, they consulted Juan Macias about the design and construction of the new church, which was officially completed in 1607.
